Doctors of Christian Institute of Health Sciences & Research (CIHSR) in Dimapur have successfully removed a 4kg benign fat tumour from the left back shoulder of a man who had been living with the burden for the last twenty years. Until a Good Samaritan came along. Dr. Temsula Alinger and Dr. Ikheto Yenito (general surgery) on Friday removed the tumour from Kekhriengulie, a 53-year-old farmer from Tsiepama village.
Admitting that the case was a rare one and the first of its kind that he had handled, Dr. Ikheto said that the operation lasted for more than two hours as compared to half-an-hour for other normal surgeries. He said there were no complications during surgery and that the patient did not require blood transfusion.
He said there was no trace of cancer and there was a slim chance of post-surgery complications occuring. “The patient is doing well and he will hopefully be able to go home after a couple of days,” Dr. Ikheto said.
However, to be on the safer said, the doctor said samples of the tissues of the tumour will be sent for biopsy. According to relatives of the patient, the tumour was detected some twenty years ago when it was just the size of a bean seed and that no one had taken serious note of it. But as years went by, the tumour also grew.
Kekhriengulie, a poor farmer with thirteen children had no means to go for medical treatment and he bore the burden silently. But fate intervened when one woman heard about his plight. “When I came to know about the suffering of Kekhriengulie, I decided to mobilize fund for his treatment and I started approaching well-wishers and friends since November last year to lend a helping hand,” said Mrs. Diethonou Shuya. Beaming with happiness at the success of the operation, she gave credit to all who contributed to the medical treatment.
