Kohima, July 14 (MExN): Days after a similar enforcement and awareness exercise in Kohima, the State Taxes Department carried out a two-day field inspection across business establishments in Dimapur, with officials reporting that most registered taxpayers were ‘complying’ with Goods and Services Tax (GST) provisions, although some discrepancies were detected.
The discrepancies detected in some establishments would be examined further in accordance with the provisions of the Nagaland Goods and Services Tax (NGST) Act, 2017, the State DIPR informed, citing the department.
The inspection was undertaken by the Dimapur Unit of the State Taxes Department from July 13 to 14 as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen GST compliance, promote awareness among traders and vendors, and verify business activities at the ground level.
A team led by the Deputy Commissioner of State Taxes under an authorisation issued by the Office of the Commissioner of State Taxes, Nagaland, under Section 67 of the NGST Act, 2017 conducted the inspection.
During the inspection, officials verified the issuance of GST bills and invoices by registered vendors, conducted stock verification, reviewed business activities, and examined GST registration details to assess compliance with the provisions of the NGST Act.
The team also interacted with business owners to clarify GST-related queries and encouraged voluntary compliance, the report said.
As part of the awareness drive, traders and consumers were educated on the importance of issuing and obtaining proper GST invoices.
Stating that GST bills promote transparency, help curb tax evasion and contribute to the State's development, the Department also appealed to all business establishments to issue GST invoices for every taxable supply and maintain proper books of accounts.
It also urged consumers to insist on GST bills for every purchase.
Reiterating its commitment to improving tax compliance, the Tax Department said such field inspections and awareness drives would continue regularly across Nagaland to promote a fair, transparent and compliant tax environment.
Similar inspections were conducted on June 17 and 18.
