After NRC, Lotha Students’ Union assess border situation

Dimapur, August 10 (MExN): The Lotha Students’ Union (LSU) conducted an official tour to the Lotha villages bordering Assam on August 5 and 6 “to monitor and assess the border situation with the impending anticipated influx of illegal immigrants due to the NRC issue.”

The team visited Bhandari and Yampha areas where consultative meeting was conducted with the Lotha frontal organisations of Lotha Lower Range, Ralan Area Lotha Hoho and also with the students’ union of the area.

LSU, General Secretary, Ashanthung Humtso, in-charge of the issue, stated in a press release that “Lothas have been sharing the longest border with Assam, and there is a critical need for providing security and to safeguard the life of our people for peaceful coexistence which is the concern of every union and individuals.”

The Union expressed that the “need of the hour is to check the border areas where currently Nagaland is facing an impending threat of illegal immigrants due to deficient and obsolete Government system which disables the concerned departments in regulating and monitoring immigration into the State.”

While Assam has taken measures to secure their future, with more than 40.7 Lakhs non NRC card holder in Assam, which will constitute a large number of illegal immigrants and poses a grave threat to the peace loving people living in both sides of the border areas, the Union added.

The Union while meeting with the unions and organizations asked the people in the area people “to be more vigil and observant of any abnormal activities in the Assam-Nagaland border dispute area and to report immediately to the LSU.”

The LSU also met with the police department at the check gates and the Indian Reserve Battalion deployed at Ralan and apprised them to exercise their assigned duty to usher a secure and peaceful environment.

The LSU while interacting with the police at the locality learned “the need and urgency of deploying more police officials in the area to strengthen the security,” while the team noticed and highlighted the lack of personals and officers at the Ralan Police station.

While taking note of the grievances from the people and police forces, the LSU has appealed to the “Government to work immediately towards ensuring the border security and to effectively regulate and monitor all immigration activity into the state effectively through implementation of the ILP reform recommendations which has earlier been submitted to the Government.”
