‘AIDS orphans crisis has a catastrophic impact’

Kohima | May 7 : Nagaland State joined along with the rest of the world in celebrating World AIDS Orphan’s Day under the theme “Childs’ Right” held today at State Academy Hall.
Addressing the gathering, Abie-Meru, President Naga Mothers Association who graced the occasion as the chief guest said more than 25 million children worldwide have lost one or both parents to AIDS where behind the statistics there are numerous stories of children suffering from AIDS. Abie noted that the AIDS orphans crisis has a catastrophic impact on household communities, deepening, poverty and exacerbating hardships and the extended family remains the only safety net for most affected children. She said despite progress in preventing and treating AIDS, “We are ignoring the basic needs of millions of AIDS orphans, fewer than 1 in 10 AIDS orphans receive any support,” Abie said.
Also adding that few resources are reaching the families and communities that provide the front-line response she said the generation will be lost if urgent measures for these children to access their basic rights. Abie fervently appealed to the participants that every individual has a sphere of influence and becoming the critical zone of action stating that be it a parents, relative, neighbor, student, teacher, healthcare worker, social worker, government official, community leader or politician, she said immediate attention is required to eliminate prejudice, bias, abuse, stigma and discrimination towards AIDS orphans and vulnerable children and to extend unconditional care and support towards the affected children.
Additional Director, Neiphi Kire in his welcome address said Government of Nagaland declared in 2007 to observe May 7th as world AIDS orphans’ day and since then it  is been followed every year to reach out the less fortunate AIDS orphans. Kire said that though thorough study has not been done in Nagaland, it is the responsible of every individual to contribute rather depending on foreign agencies or NGOs as the AIDS orphans has a fear to open their issues. He also asserted that AIDS orphans are denied or neglected in terms of education or health care which is needed to be addressed.
Project Director, NSACS, Nandira Chankija while delivering vote of thanks urged the gathering to transform into action to the children as they need love and care. Natsali & friends, Toshonaro Naga idol, Red ribbon club of Sazolie College and Kenei, Brand Ambassador, Rock Reach enthralled the gatherings with songs.

Message on WORLD AIDS ORPHANS DAY

As yet another round of the calendar comes it is yet another special moment and reminder to all that 7th May 2011 is Word AIDS Orphans Day, a grassroots campaign to draw attention to and advocate on behalf of the more than 16 million children orphaned by AIDS. World AIDS Orphans Day was founded in 2002 by FXB International.
The Legacy Explorers humbly joint the honourable initiative in the most humble manner and voiced our voice, tabled our commitment and appeal to all on behalf of about 16 millions to take a day to feel the emotion and the sentiment of the infected & Affected and finally being orphaned by AIDS, leaving them under the uncertain care of the world with little or no basic needs of human-being.
The story cannot end with uncertainty, for we are created in the image of God which includes Love and care, we network for a better society and this is where we have hope for our 16 millions and other unaccounted orphans or otherwise we still wait for another millions to open our eyes as quoted by KOFI ANNAN;
“The global HIV/AIDS epidemic is an unprecedented crisis that requires an unprecedented response. In particular it requires solidarity -- between the healthy and the sick, between rich and poor, and above all, between richer and poorer nations. We have 30 million orphans already. How many more do we have to get, to wake up?” --- Kofi Annan
Now that we need to put a halt and reverse the HIV/AIDS and so do the AIDS orphans and most importantly and the most deadly virus which we normally carry along in our mind in most of the circumstances is Stigma and Discrimination which we really need to do away with.
Today let this AIDS orphans Day bring us another tablet to heal us from the infection of Stigma & Discriminations Virus.
