Dimapur, September 14 (MExN): The Ao Students' Conference (AKM) has strongly condemned what it termed as “the senseless assault” on its former President and the present AKM Tribunal General, L Jemti Longchar on August 25.
He was allegedly assaulted by one H Zunpenthung Kikon of Longsachung Village and a resident of Teheryiro Colony (Wokha town), a few kilometer away from Longsa Village in Wokha District.
Condemning the incident, the AKM in a press note issued by its President Imkongwati and Asst. General Secretary Lolentoshi said that the former president was assaulted without any “rhyme or reason.”
Recounting the incident, the AKM said that the former president was returning from Kohima on the fateful day when his saw his friend, a former AKM Vice President, involved in a car accident.
“As a responsible citizen and a students' leader, the former AKM President stopped and tried to help sort out the situation. As the case was in the process of being settled in the spirit of understanding between the two parties after some negotiation,” it said.
However, the AKM maintained that Zunpenthung, who was not involved in the accident in any manner, allegedly assaulted Jemti “without any reason.”
Both were not were not directly involved in the accident; the former AKM President was there by providence and was only trying to help out, it said.
“The AKM understands that accidents do happen in our daily lives. It happens to everyone; however, in such a situation, as civilized citizens, we should endeavor to solve the matter in a sensible manner without having to resort to violence,” it further noted.
In this regard the AKM condemned as assault as “totally uncalled for, barbaric and condemnable.” The action is highly questionable and needs to be condemned by every right-thinking citizens of the society, it added.
