Niuland, October 26 (MExN): The much-awaited Amur falcons have arrived at their roosting area in Nikhekhu village, Niuland. According to a press release issued by the Nikhekhu Village Council, the migratory birds have reached their destination in the rubber, teak, and tea plantation area adjacent to the Atoqa Tea Factory — the first roosting site of the season in the region.
The council stated that the birds will remain in the area until the end of November or the first week of December before continuing their migration to their next destination. The Amur falcons travel from China and Russia to South Africa, covering an estimated distance of 22,000 km.
In an effort to ensure their protection, the Nikhekhu Village Council has mobilised youth volunteers and guides to assist visitors and to prevent any form of hunting or disturbance to the birds. It further informed that the village is working closely with the administration and the forest department to ensure the safety of the migratory species.
Appealing for government support, the council urged the Nagaland Government, particularly the Departments of Tourism, Forest and Environment, and PWD (R&B), to address the poor condition of the 3-kilometre stretch leading from the Niuland highway to the roosting site. It stated that the deplorable condition of the approach road has made it difficult for tourists to access the area and view the falcons.
“The site needs urgent attention to facilitate birding tour operators and bird watchers to experience the amazing sightings,” the council said. It further requested the Tourism Department to create basic amenities and infrastructure to support visitors and promote eco-tourism in the area.
As part of its awareness and conservation efforts, the village council plans to curate various events in collaboration with multiple stakeholders. It also issued an advisory warning that any violation or hunting activity would be dealt with strictly.
Welcoming tourists, guests, and educational groups to visit the roosting area, the council assured full cooperation and support, describing the phenomenon as an “extraordinary experience” for all visitors.
