Kohima, October 26 (MExN): The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast light to moderate rain and thunderstorms at many places, with isolated heavy rainfall over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura from October 30 to November 1.
Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds reaching 40–50 kmph are expected over Arunachal Pradesh and Assam & Meghalaya on October 29 and 30.
Heavy rainfall is likely at isolated locations in Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura on October 30–November 1, while Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya may also receive persistent heavy showers.
The weather activity is linked to the deep depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal, which is moving west-northwest at 8 kmph and is expected to intensify into Cyclone Montha.
In an update on Sunday evening, the IMD informed that by October 28, it may strengthen into a severe cyclonic storm and make landfall along the Andhra Pradesh coast near Kakinada, bringing maximum sustained winds of 90–100 kmph gusting up to 110 kmph.
Meanwhile, a depression over the eastcentral Arabian Sea is moving southwards and is likely to travel southeast over the next 24 hours, contributing to unstable weather over the country, it said.
The IMD has also noted the persistence of a western disturbance and upper air troughs affecting the subcontinent.
In other places, especially in coastal areas, authorities have issued a high alert and are coordinating with relevant disaster management agencies and local administrations to ensure preparedness for any emergencies.
Residents are advised to remain vigilant, follow official advisories, and take necessary precautions against heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong winds over the coming days.
