DIMAPUR: The All Nagaland College Students’ Union (ANCSU) has proposed to boycott the functioning of all colleges in Nagaland on Tuesday, September 13 in protest against the Central government’s delay in disbursing the full amount of post-metric scholarships to college students. The ANCSU has further stated that it would call for a State wide bandh on Friday, September 16 if the boycott fails to yield positive results. Addressing a press conference at the Tourist Lodge here today, President of the ANCSU Chichamo Ngullie, while informing of the meeting that took place between Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio and ANCSU members yesterday, said that Rio had promised to arrange for disbursement of scholarships from other sources if the Central government does not distribute the same on time. Despite Rio’s assurance, the student body has decided to go ahead with their agitation programmes in order to pressurize the Centre through the Nagaland government.
Earlier, Delhi had sanctioned only about Rs 5.7 crore out of Nagaland’s total demand of approximately Rs 19 crore. In this regard, the ANCSU has stated that it had asked the Chief Minister to divert money from the State fund to cover the balance amount. The main reason for the delay in scholarships is due to the fact that six Naga students had enrolled in an educational institution in Delhi by the name of Prakash College which is not recognized by the Ministry of Tribal Welfare, Ngullie said. He further enquired as to why 30, 999 scholarship deserving students should be affected because of only six students. The ANCSU has requested all student leaders and heads of institutions to support its decision on the proposed boycott and the meditated bandh.
