Union submits representation to MoS Education and External Affairs

Dimapur, August 17 (MExN): The All Nagaland College Students’ Union (ANCSU) on August 17 sought the help of Union Minister of State (MoS) for Education and External Affairs, Dr Rajkumar Ranjan Singh in doing away with the instalment system in disbursement of post-matric scholarships for ST students in the State.

ANCSU apprised the Union Minister that, although the post-matric scholarship for ST students is funded by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, it is disbursed to the students on instalment basis which is unable to facilitate the actual purpose of the scholarship.

As such, the Union requested the Union Minister to take up the matter with the Ministry of Tribal Affairs and facilitate in disbursing the scholarship without instalments.

It also sought provision of loans to the deprived, meritorious and deserving students from Nagaland to support their academic needs.

The Union drew the MoS’ attention to ‘pertinent concerns’ in the State education system through a representation, appended by its President and General Secretary on August 17, a day after the MoS arrived in Nagaland on a two-day visit to the State.

Expressing confidence that the latter’s vast experiences as an Academician would amplify the educational progress; the Union also highlighted the plight of education system in Nagaland over the years. Nagaland has hungered for better institutions, better infrastructures, modern facilities and desirable policies, it said.

Accordingly, the ANCSU sought the Minister’s favor and consideration on several concerns including the scholarship issue.

New Education Policy 2020

The ANCSU noted that, states like Nagaland would take prolonged duration to go along with the New Education Policy (NEP) 2020. “It is evident that with the given infrastructures and facilities in our state, there will be more of negative repercussions,” it added.

In this regard, the Union stated that if at all the NEP is implemented, special attention and special financial assistance “must be extended to the State Higher Education of Nagaland.”

Human Resource Development Centre for Nagaland

ANCSU underscored the importance of Human Resource Development Centre (HRDC) as a crucial link between teacher motivation and the quality of education, helping college and university teachers in developing their skills. However, it observed that, till date, teachers in Nagaland are required to go outside the state for orientation programmes/refresher courses. As such, the Union requested for setting up a Human Resource Development Centre in Nagaland.

Further, highlighting that Nagaland is yet to enjoy the existence of any Research Centre and Vocational Training Centres, the Union appealed for the establishment of such centres, assuring that it would produce ‘staggering number of scholars, researchers, scientists and skilled youths’.
