The All Naga Students’ Association, Manipur (ANSAM), expressed “utmost seriousness” over incidents repeatedly occurring along the national highway between Kangpokpi and Motbung.

It condemned “uncivilised acts” against two persons from the Rengma community on the night of March 22, 2026, while they were travelling from Tseminyu, Nagaland to Imphal for small-scale business.

Such acts of violence, intimidation and extortion along the highway are highly unacceptable and violate human rights, the rule of law and civil society norms, it stated.

The Association attributed the incidents to “suspected armed Kuki gangs/Kuki militants” and alleged they occur regularly due to negligence of the concerned law enforcement agencies, despite repeated appeals from civil society and the public.

ANSAM urged the Government of Manipur and concerned agencies to initiate a swift, impartial and transparent investigation and take effective measures to ensure the safety of civilians travelling along the route.

ANSAM further expressed “unwavering solidarity” with the victims, the Rengma Students’ Union, and the wider Naga community, and reiterated the need to safeguard the rights and well-being of all communities.
