Governor of Odisha, Dr SC Jamir today challenged the Ao community to strive for truth and work for the betterment of the whole Naga people just like the forebears who spread the gospel of Christianity at the past despite many difficulties.

The veteran politician and former chief minister of Nagaland, Dr SC Jamir, who was the chief guest at the grand Moatsu festival celebration at Imkongmeren Sports Complex, Mokokchung organized by Jangpetkong Senso Telongjem, Mokokchung Town, expressed deep apprehension over the present Naga society.

Dr Jamir said that the present Naga society is going through a dark phase just like the days of our forefathers before the advent of Christianity. In this regard, he said that with the coming of Christianity in the Ao areas, the Ao pioneers spread the gospel to the whole of the Naga areas spreading the love of God, truth and unity to the whole Naga country.   However, he strongly lamented that the Naga society is going through a dark phase and that the Ao people should once again spearhead just like the ‘grandparents’ who with nothing but faith, belief in truth and honesty brought so much changes in the whole Naga society some hundred years ago.

Saying that the Aos never asked or competed for leadership, Dr Jamir however said that in the past the Aos, for the sake of the Naga society, led the people in the past. In this connection he pointed out the first NNC president T Aliba Imti, the first Naga People Convention chairman – Imkongliba and the first chief minister of Nagaland state P Shilu Ao. These leaders were mandated by the Naga people and they sacrificed so much for the Naga people, he said.

He expressed deep grief at the present state of affairs and said that there is a lack of truth in the society simply out of fear. Dr Jamir said that different village councils (yimden), NGOs and organizations and even the church cannot speak the truth because of fear.

He expressed that the society should now think of today and the future and not to dwell too much on the past. In this connection, he expressed deep apprehension over the educated unemployment problem in the society with more than 75,000 registered educated unemployed.

He said that the problem of educated unemployment in the society would be more problematic than the issue of sovereignty and that the society should seriously think about the future of the youths. He warned that the problem of educated unemployment among the youths, if not addressed immediately, would turn out to be very dangerous to our society.

He therefore called upon the people to be more realistic, to open our eyes and ears and to think about what can be achieved and what can’t be so that the Naga people can progress and march ahead with the rest of the world. He called upon the Ao people to once again rededicate themselves and just like the ‘grandparents’ who brought light through Christianity, to work for the Naga society with faith, truth and honesty so that the Naga society can once again progress.

The Governor was accompanied by his son Parliamentary Secretary for Tourism C Apok Jamir and Advisor to Chief Minister, Government of Nagaland, Merentoshi R Jamir. MLA and Chairman DAN & NBRM, Dr Longri, who is the peoples’ representative from 29 Jangpetkong AC, was the guest of honor at the programme.

Hundreds of citizens from the Jangpetkong range, in-laws, well-wishers attended today’s function. Representative from the Ao Senden, AKM, Watsu Mungdang Eastern Nagaland Peoples’ Organization Mokokchung town, Mokokchung town Lanur Telongjem and a host of dignitaries from the district administration and police also attended the programme.
