Works are underway for construction of the biggest Ao ‘Morung’ in the commercial hub Dimapur at the site of old Ao Senden Riju (Morung) near ISBT, Purana Bazar, Dimapur.
The new Morung with a plinth area of 80x150 feet and 25 feet in height will have sitting capacity of approximately 2000 people. Once completed, the Morung can be used for multipurpose activity including wedding, seminar, public meeting and other events.
Plans are also afoot to construct a park for and swimming pool for recreational purposes at the site. Besides it will have a commercial complex to generate fund for the maintenance of the site.
Dimapur Ao Youth Forum which was entrusted to oversee the construction of the Morung had earlier in 2015 organised a raffle draw and garnered Rs. 40 lakhs to start the project. In the meantime, individuals and organizations also contributed both in cash and kind for the project. The Morung is likely to be completed by year end. Sources said the old Morung would be renovated and converted to air conditioned conference hall.
It may be mentioned the site of the Ao Senden Riju was donated by then Forest minister SI Jamir and Minister for Cooperation I Nungshi Longkumer.
The foundation stone of the Riju was laid by then Chief minister SC Jamir on May 2, 1995 and the Riju was inaugurated by then Governor OP Sharma on May 1,1999.
