The new school building of Government Primary School, GPS at Aoyim Village in Chümoukedima district now stands as a beacon of hope and community spirit.

With not just part of the building funded by the School Education Department but part of it constructed through the collective efforts of the villagers here, the school now has enough class rooms and also a rest room for the teachers.

Speaking to the VDB Secretary of the village, Tuden Jamir said the journey began when the government has sanctioned construction for new a 4-room, one storeyed school building. Jamir said when such a new construction was to begin, he as a village functionary was also chosen to be convener of the new construction committee, ushering the key role that community plays in today's education system.

"The education department has funded for construction of a one storeyed 4 rooms building but realised that 4 rooms were not enough as additionally 4 rooms were required, including 3 classrooms and a staff room," he said, adding that this was when they spoke to the contractors.

However, Jamir said it was upon them to construct the additional rooms to accommodate all the students.

The school presently has around 90 students enrolled and about 10 staffs.  Officials from the Education department also informed The Morung Express that in the current financial year 2024, reconstruction of dilapidated classrooms at GPS, Aoyim was augmented through the Samagra Shiksha, Kohima.

Apart from the scheme, the villagers had played a major role in constructing the other rooms. In this regard, the building convener said they planned to construct the additional room in an Assam type house.

Meanwhile, Jamir narrated that land was also in requirement as a bigger compound was needed to accommodate the additional construction. "When the need arose, the present GB of the Village, Sunep donated the land which was worth about Rs 30 lakhs,” he added.

Jamir said after the construction committee was set up, construction began around February, this year and was completed in 4 months. Speaking further about how contributions came about, the convener said that they were compelled to complete the school on credit to ensure that the school was running.

Apart from contribution from the villagers and from various sources making remarkable progress, the community still faces a debt of about 8 Lakhs, accrued during the construction phase.

"It is not solely the building that we took up for construction but includes land filling and road construction that we undertook, so expenses was more," he said.

Although our village is still growing and progressing and despite needing various development, having a good school is paramount, Jamir said adding that there is still a long way to complete amenities in the school like fencing wall, sanitation among others.

The Convener further said that they are due to inaugurate the new space and will do so only after the school reopens after summer vacations.
