Government must reschedule all events falling on Sunday, KBBB Youth Convention resolves
Mon, November 1 (MExN): Given the importance of Sunday for Naga Christians, the Konyak Baptist Bumeinok Bangjüm (KBBB) today urged the Nagaland Government to appeal to the Election Commission of India to reconsider the counting date of results for the Tapi AC bye-election scheduled on December 3.
The bye-election for the 43rd Tapi Assembly Constituency is fixed for November 7, while the counting date is December 3, which falls on a Sunday.
According to the apex Konyak Baptist association, the appeal has been made in view of the resolution adopted at the 69th KBBB Youth Convention held in Wakching Town from October 26-28.
The convention, among other, emphasised the rights of the people to observe their religious events, with the youth standing against the imposition of any activity by the government or any other organisations that would affect the observation of Christian red-letter days such as Sunday, Christmas, and Passion Week, etc.
Accordingly, it resolved that the Government must reschedule all events that fall on Sunday and other Christian events to avoid conflicts of interest, which are avoidable, stated a press release from Rev M Chemyuh, Executive Secretary KBBB.
Being bonafide citizens, Christians are willing to participate in government-organised programs, including cleanliness drives, voting, vote counting, or any other common activities, provided that mutual respect for each other's religion and cultural importance is upheld in this largest democratic country, it said.
However, as democracy is known as the government of the people, by the people, and for the people, the Government of the day must kindly reconsider the observation of those events that hurt the religious sentiments of Christians and embarrass the NBCC and its churches, it maintained.
The KBBB devoutly hopes and prays that the Government of the day will listen to the appeal made by the people, it added.
