Pertaining to the incident and subsequent assault meted out to a local farmer and three students on June 2 at Mao Gate by the 22 Assam Rifles personnel led by a Major, the issue has been amicably settled with the Assam Rifles tendering an unconditional apology on behalf of the erring personnel today.
The local farmer and three students namely Nepuni s/o Lokho, Neli s/o Nepuni, Pfokreni s/o Nepuni and Mothuhru s/o Daihru of Songsong village were brutally assaulted on June 2 at Mangai, Mao by the 22 Assam Rifles personnel under the command of Major Prannam. However, the matter has been amicably settled at a meeting held here today in the presence of MLA M. Thorho, SDO Tadubi, DIG MP, CO 22 Assam Rifles, SDPO and the President Mao Council at Mao Police Station, Mao Gate.
According to a copy of settlement, the CO S. B. Rana unconditionally apologized on behalf of the culprit personnel. The CO have also admitted and apologized to the victim’s mother personally. The concerned village chairman of Songsong accepted the apology tendered by the Assam Rifles. Further, a copy of settlement stated that the villagers also apologized for the retaliation meted out to the security personnel.
Earlier, students carrying placards, gathered at Mao Police Station while the meeting was going on. Among the many placards reads “Ceasefire is universal,” “Assam Rifles breaking Indian Democracy,” “Don’t break peace to pieces,” “Don’t cease peace.”
Commercial establishments at Mao gate also downed shutters at the time of the meeting.
