Dimapur, April 1 (MExN): The Assam Rifles today informed that arms and ammunitions have been seized from activists of the outlawed United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) cadres in Tizit, under Mon district, following a shootout on March 31.
The IGAR (North) informed today that on March 31, the 6th Assam Rifles of 7 Sector had received an input about the presence of five ULFA cadres in an area called Takumpathar in Tizit sub division. A party of AR troops cordoned off a in the said areas where the ULFA cadres were suspected to have been hiding, said the IGAR (N) in a press release today.
The Assam Rifles said that the cadres were challenged and asked to surrender, According to the IGAR the ULFA cadres opened fire and hurled a grenade which fell short and exploded far from target. The cadres then ran into the Abhaypur Reserve Forest on the rear side of the house, the AR said.
The troops recovered one AK 47, AK 47 ammunition, explosives and detonation batteries from the site, the AR said.
“It should be noted that ULFA had planned to carryout explosions in various parts in Assam as a run up to their raising day. Recovery of warlike stores and explosives confirms that the ULFA cadres were planning to engineer a major blast/incident, which has been averted by the timely action of Assam Rifles, thus saving numerous lives and property,” the note added.
