‘Assam Govt first to blame for NC Hills violence’

Dimapur, June 30 (MExN): Against the backdrop of violence in NC Hills between Zeme Nagas and Dimasas, a two member delegation of the Diphu Citizens Peace Forum (DCPC) today categorically put the blame on the government of Assam for the present turmoil in the NC Hills which has cost more than 60 lives and thousands displaced from their homes.  The DCPF Chairman Dr Solomon Rongpi and Secretary Tom Mangattuthazhe in a ‘press conference’ with media persons based in Dimapur expressed suspicion of “outside forces alien to tribal ethos of tolerance and brotherhood in the NC Hills massacre”.

On being queried about the so called “third force” involved in the NC Hills violence, the DCPF leaders however said that it is not a “third force” but it should be known as “third forces”, since there are many factors involved in the present turmoil.  However, the two DCPF leaders said that they blame the Government of Assam ‘first thing’ for the present carnage in NC Hills because so far no government officials have visited the troubled areas or the Assam Government has not taken any step in resolving the violence between the Dimasas and the Zemes in NC Hills.

However, the DCPF maintained that there is ‘no short term solution’ to the present problem in the NC Hills and unless the government of Assam intervenes positively, then peace would still elude in the area.

“Once decision is made in Guwahati, then the problem will stop immediately,” Tom Mangattuthazhe asserted. On being queried whether they are trying to talk with the ‘government’ to talk out the problem, the two DCPF members asserted that they are trying but the government said that they could not give the time to them.

No wonder, it may be mentioned here various groups and organizations have spoken out about the involvement of a third force in NC Hills. While the term “third force” has remained vague so far, perhaps this might be the first time some organizations has directly put the blame first thing on the Assam government for the ongoing carnage in NC Hills.
