Assam- Nagaland border tense

MERAPANI, June 4 (Agencies): Tension prevails among the residents of Merapani at D Sector of Assam-Nagaland border in Golaghat district over pitching of a NEC road by Nagaland. The Nagaland government yesterday resumed the pitching of the road with a length of 1.7 kilometer which falls within Assam, which led to a strong resentment among the public of the area.

In this connection, hundreds of people led by Daiyang Anchalik Students’ Union gheraoed the border magistrate of Golaghat, Ghanakanta Pegu, for more than two hours on the road. Later, he was freed by OC, Merapani police station.

Tenders were called by the Nagaland government for repitching of the Nagaland part of the important NEC road that connects Golaghat to Manipur through Nagaland. One Mohan Singh of Dimapur has been entrusted the work. But the Nagaland government also started works on the 1.7-km road (from zero point to Merapani town), which falls under Assam province, on May 5. But the public as well as several organisations opposed the matter and the Golaghat Deputy Commissioner Dipak Kr Goswami stopped the work. But Nagaland resumed the work on May 9. The Daiyang Anchalik Students’ Union burnt the effigy of the border magistrate G Pegu on the charge of his negligence on the matter. The magistrate finally stopped the work for the time being. But as he did not seize the roller and the gravel, Nagaland could resume the work yesterday. It is pertinent to mention that due to the negligence of the Assam Government, Nagaland has encroached several hectares of land of Assam in A,B,C, sectors. And finally, they are trying to encroach areas at ‘D’ sector.

Such developments are causing great tension in the border areas. The residents of the area are demanding that the Chief Minister visit the spot and try for bringing a permanent solution of the problem.
