Resource persons and participants during the STRY programme at SDAO, Niuland.

DIMAPUR, MAY 2 (MExN): ATMA Dimapur in association with SAMETI, Nagaland and MANAGE, Hyderabad organized a Skill Training of Rural Youth (STRY) on the topic ‘Vermicomposting for Enhancing Rural Livelihood’ at SDAO, Niuland from April 26 to May 1.
The programme was conducted to offer modular skill training opportunities for rural youths based on local needs and to create a pool of skilled manpower to perform farm and non-farm operations.
During the 6-day training programme, resource persons from SDAO Niuland, Department of Soil and Water Conservation and ATMA Dimapur spoke on the importance of organic farming and vermicomposting, requirements of raw materials, role of earthworm, methods of vermicomposting, handling and harvesting of vermicompost, vermiwash, benefits in terms of soil health and crop productivity and economic importance of vermicompost.
Field visit for 18 youths was conducted to practicing vermicompost farmers and women farmers who shared their experiences and success stories with the trainees. Hands-on training and step-by-step demonstration while setting up one low cost vermi bed was also conducted both by the trainees and resource persons.
