The All Tribal Students’ Union, Manipur (ATSUM) on Sunday deferred its proposed agitation for 10 days.
“In view of the state government’s sincere commitment and steps taken for early conduct of Autonomous District Council (ADC) election on time and appeal to defer the agitation, the proposed 48-hour inter-state bandh and ban on construction works of national projects in the state which was scheduled to commence from October 26 has been deferred for 10 days,” ATSUM said in a press statement today.
According to ATSUM, this decision was taken today by ATSUM, its federating units and the state government during their second round of talks. According to ATSUM, following the written assurance from the state government that the latter is ready for considering the demand for timely conduct of ADC election (without further extension), the proposed agitation has been deferred.
“As the decision to defer the proposed agitation was taken with the written assurance from the state government that the demand for timely conduct of ADC election (without further extension) will be considered in the state cabinet meeting to be held within a short period of time, ATSUM believes that the state government will adopt a concrete decision for announcement of date of election to the 6 ADCs in consultation with the relevant authorities within a stipulated 10 days’ time,” the apex tribal student body of Manipur stated.
“However, if the state government fails to adhere to its commitment, ATSUM will resort to agitations on the expiry of the 10 days’ time,” the tribal student body added.
