The attack at the residence of Patricia Mukhim, Editor of Shillong Times, has resulted in a shock wave across Shillong with State Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma as well as opposition members condemning the incident.
While condemning the incident, Conrad Sangma said, “This has definitely worried and bothered us that this kind of incident is taking place, I immediately have spoken to the Home Minister and we are coordinating with the DGP.”
Assuring appropriate action, Sangma said, “We will find the people who are behind this act and we will ensure that justice is done in this case so the department is on the job.”
“We need to find a way forward in this issue,” he added.
Expressing regret over the incident, Sangma noted that such incidents are growing all over. “Normally this kind of incidents do not happen in Meghalaya and suddenly this has happened and this is quite alarming,” he rued.
The Opposition Congress, meanwhile, condemned the incident. Congress spokesperson Zenith Sangma suggested that there is “an attempt to suppress the right to freedom of speech” as enshrined in the constitution.
Noting that attacks on journalist are being reported sporadically all over the country, Zenith viewed that the miscreants are not deterred to commit such acts. “It is high time for the government to pull up its socks in tackling all these things,” he maintained.
Meanwhile, Home Minister James Sangma informed that two incidents took place on Tuesday night and that the police department is doing its best to nab the culprits.
On Tuesday night, unidentified miscreants threw a petrol bomb at the residence of the Editor of The Shillong Times, Patricia Mukhim at Umpling.
The incident happened on at around 8:30 p.m. Two motorcycle-borne youths with faces covered were reportedly seen hurling the petrol bomb.
