Bunches of bananas slung from bicycles are seen lined up for sale at New Market area, Dimapur on Tuesday. The unripe bananas are transported from banana plantations in Uriamghat, Assam and Niuland in Nagaland till Lahoriijan, which borders Dimapur. From there, the bananas are then transported in cycles to Dimapur in the morning where fruit dealers buy them in bulk. The bananas are then reported to be artificially ripened with chemicals such as calcium carbides, which is considered as hazardous to health, and put up for sale in the market.
