Normal life was affected in the valley districts, especially in Imphal, on Monday due to a 24-hour total shutdown imposed by the ‘Joint Action Committee (JAC) Against the Brutal Murder of Athuan Abonmai.’

The JAC went ahead with the total shutdown after no agreement was reached with the government in a talk at the chief minister’s level on Sunday evening. The 24-hour shutdown commenced on Sunday midnight.

Shops, fuel stations, financial institutions and other business establishments were shut in Imphal while public transport was off the roads. Bandh supporters were seen on the roads at various places across Imphal and in its outskirts to impose the shutdown.

While imposing the shutdown, they shouted various slogans demanding booking of the culprits and to fulfil the demands of the JAC. They also criticized the state government for its inability to arrest the culprits.

However, the bandh had no impact in the hill areas.

No untoward incidents related with the total shutdown were reported till the time of filing this report.

Former president of Zeliangrong Baudi (Assam, Manipur and Nagaland) Athuan Abonmai, was allegedly murdered by miscreants who abducted him from Tamenglong district headquarters while a government function attended by state Chief Minister was in progress on September 22 last.

The JAC with the support of various civil society organizations has been carrying out a series of protests, pressing the state government to fulfill its demands.
