Normal vehicular movements along the Old Cachar Road being used currently as a diversion route of NH-37 was disrupted owing to a 48-hour bandh along the route.
After the NH-37 (Imphal-Jiribam road) was disconnected due to the collapse of a bridge on Irang River on November 1 last, the Old Cachar Road, which is also known as Tongjei Maril, has been used as a diversion route.
The normal traffic on this road has been, however, suspended with the commencement of the 48-hour bandh along the road by Joint Action Committee (JAC) of Khoupum Area in Manipur. Khoupum Area Villages Authority Council, Rongmei Lu Phuam of Khoupum Area and Zeliangrong Students' Union of Khoupum Area formed the JAC.
The bandh commenced from Tuesday evening (November 10 at 5 pm) has been imposed in protest against the alleged “non-adherence” to the guidelines for maintaining work quality of the road stretch from Zoujangtek to Rengpang road.
The JAC was angered by the state government’s alleged lackadaisical attitude to its repeated appeals for checking the quality of the road construction work.
During the bandh, a protest rally was carried out along the road (Old Cachar road) under the banner of the agitating JAC.
The JAC said the protest is being held as the government has "failed" to take steps despite several memorandums submitted to the government.
The JAC further alleged that the condition of the road worsened after the road was started using a diversion route of NH-37.
Heavy vehicles are plying on this route after the recent collapse of Irang Bridge on NH 37 Imphal-Jiribam road.
