The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has appealed to the banned Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) to shun violence and come to the mainstream.

“We condemn the act (of violence) and that is why we are appealing to the extremist groups including the HNLC to come to the mainstream,” BJP state president Ernest Mawrie said when asked on frequent IED attacks in Shillong.

He also expressed that the party is willing to take the matter up with the Centre for inviting the HNLC for peace talks.

“When I took over as a state president, we have stated that we are there for them (HNLC) to lead the way, to pave the way to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to come for peace talks,” he said.

Mawrie further informed that the issue was also discussed with the Union Law & Justice Minister Kiren Rijiju during his visit to the state on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the BJP state president said that he would soon take up with chief minister Conrad K Sangma on the need for the inquiry into the alleged corruption be completed within the stipulated timeframe.
