Dimapur, May 1 (MExN): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Nagaland State unit conducted a state-level workshop on the Waqf Amendment Act 2025 at the BJP Dimapur District Office on April 30.

The workshop, organised by the party’s Dimapur District unit, was attended by delegates including State Office Bearers, Spokespersons, State Council Members, Morcha leaders, and district and mandal representatives.

According to a press statement from the BJP Dimapur District, the workshop aimed to create awareness on the new Waqf Amendment Act 2025 and its implications.

Speaking on the occasion, State Vice President and Convenor of the Waqf Amendment Act 2025 Awareness Campaign Committee, H. Haiying, highlighted the importance of the amendment in bringing transparency and accountability to Waqf property administration, it said.

He stated that the new law, enacted under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, omits Section 40 of the Waqf Act 1995, which previously granted broad powers to Waqf Boards without sufficient checks.

The amendment now mandates a 90-day public notice in newspapers before altering land records for Waqf registration, to prevent future disputes and encroachments, he added.

Haiying also highlighted that the Act proposes a centralised portal and national database of Waqf properties to enhance transparency. It introduces a uniform registration process and abolishes the concept of Waqf by user, which was based on long-term informal use rather than formal declaration.

The speaker also noted that the amendment seeks to promote the welfare of women and weaker sections within the Muslim community and expands the definition of welfare, the statement said.

This includes maintenance for widows, divorced women, and orphans, and ensures that family endowments (Waqf-alal-Aulad) cannot be misused to deny women their inheritance rights, it added.
