Dimapur, October 5 (MExN): Former Nagaland Upa Lokayukta, Mayang Lima, who was critically injured in a road mishap in Assam on October 2, succumbed to his injuries on Sunday.

He was reportedly admitted and undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Jorhat, Assam. Lima was proceeding towards Dimapur from Tuli, Mokokchung, with three others, including the driver, when the crash occurred around 1:00 am in Golaghat. One of the co-passengers, a woman, succumbed on the spot. He is survived by his wife and children.

The funeral service for late Lima will be held at Senden Riju, Purana Bazar, Dimapur, on Monday at 11 am.

As per his profile on the Nagaland Lokayukta’s website, late Lima entered the judicial service as a Judicial Magistrate 2nd Class (1991–1993) and retired as a Principal District & Sessions Judge in 2017.

Thereafter, he was appointed State Vigilance Commissioner  (June 2018 – Feb 2019) and when the Nagaland Lokayukta was constituted, he was appointed the State’s first Upa-Lokayukta in 2019.

He also tried his hand in politics and unsuccessfully contested the 2018 State Election from the 22-Arkaloong Assembly Constituency.

Meanwhile, Nagaland Chief Minister Dr Neiphiu Rio led the State in mourning his demise and described late Lima as an “able lawyer and a committed public servant who served the State Government in various esteemed capacities.” Even after his retirement, his dedication to public duty remained unwavering as he continued to serve as the Vigilance Commissioner and later as the Upa Lokayukta, he said.

CM Rio also attributed late Lima’s foray into electoral politics as “another expression of his passion for serving the people.” He further noted that the former Nagaland Upa Lokayukta was widely admired for his kindness, humility, and generosity, and that his sudden demise is a great loss for Naga society, as he still had much to offer for the welfare of the people.

“The void left by his departure will be difficult to fill. As we mourn his passing, let us cherish the legacy he leaves behind—a life defined by integrity, compassion, and service. May his example continue to inspire us,” CM Rio added. He further extended condolences to the bereaved family in a message addressed to Amongla Longkumer, the wife of late Lima.

Deputy Chief Minister Yanthungo Patton also condoled Lima's death and termed him a distinguished legal luminary who devoted his life to upholding justice and serving the people with unflinching commitment. “His contributions to the legal fraternity and public life have left an invaluable legacy that will continue to inspire generations,” he said.

“My family and I extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and admired him during this difficult time,” Patton added.
