Bokashi comes to town

DIMAPUR OCT 22 (MExN): The Department of Land Resources Development organized a three day training programme on Bokashi, Bamboo charcoal, compost making, fermented plant juice, fermented soybean etc from 17 to October 19 at the department’s Research-cum-demonstration farm at Razhuphema with Hitoshi Yokota, an integrated Agriculturist and Organic Foods Consultant from Japan as the resource person. This was informed by Moatoshi Longkumer, Deputy Director, Land Resource Development Department.   

The training programme meant for the officers and field staff was attended by about eighty trainees from all over the State besides three team members from the Nagaland Bamboo Development Agency and some local entrepreneurs. The practical-oriented sessions imparted the trainees various demonstrations which included Bokashi making, a Japanese method of preparing organic manure, compost making using locally available materials, construction of bamboo charcoal making units, extraction of bamboo charcoal, bamboo vinegar to be used as pesticides besides preparation of fermented plant juice to be used as a plant growth hormone (Japanese-style) of making fermented Soybean. Also IMO (Indigenous Micro Organism) making and techniques of smell-free piggery and poultry farming were taught to the trainees.

During the training the Director of Land resources Norman Putsure exhorted the gathering to act as agents of change and return to their respective villages and impart the same training to the farmers at the village level so that grassroots also emulate, endorse and understand the importance of organic farming and its manure applications which would greatly benefit them as its preparation was simple, cost-effective and materials easily-available.
