Paediatrician Dr Keduoneilhou Mere addresses antenatal and lactating mothers during a breastfeeding awareness programme at District Hospital, Phek.
Phek, August 6 (MExN): A health awareness programme on breastfeeding was organised at the District Hospital, Phek, as part of the ongoing World Breastfeeding Week observance from August 1 to 7. The programme, held under the theme "Breastfeeding is a Sustainable Start in Life: Strengthen What Works", was attended by ANC mothers and lactating mothers.
Paediatrician Dr Keduoneilhou Mere delivered a talk on the importance of breastfeeding, exclusive breastfeeding and its health benefits for both infants and mothers. He said breast milk provides complete nutrition for babies during the first six months of life and contains antibodies that help protect them against infections. He also highlighted that breastfeeding strengthens the emotional bond between mother and child.
Dr Mere said breastfeeding also benefits mothers by helping the uterus return to its normal size after childbirth, burning calories that may aid post-pregnancy weight loss and promoting emotional well-being. A nursing staff member from the district hospital demonstrated the correct breastfeeding technique during the programme.
Officials said World Breastfeeding Week is observed annually from August 1 to 7 to raise awareness about the importance of breastfeeding and encourage mothers to adopt optimal infant feeding practices. As part of the week-long campaign, health facilities across Phek district are organising activities to promote breastfeeding. Community Health Officers (CHOs), Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs) and Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) are conducting awareness programmes and home visits to counsel pregnant women and mothers of newborns on the benefits of exclusive breastfeeding, correct breastfeeding techniques and the need to avoid unnecessary use of infant formula, feeding bottles and pacifiers.
