Campaign on preventing and combating child trafficking reaches Tuensang district

Tuensang, June 24 (MExN): As part of campaign on preventing and combating child trafficking in 100 bordering and adjoining Districts of India, a sensitisation workshop on ‘preventing and combating child trafficking’ was organised at DC's conference hall, Tuensang on June 24. 

The workshop was organised by District Administration Tuensang in collaboration with National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) and State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR), stated a DIPR report. 

Speaking as the resources person, Tongpang L Jamir, Advocate Guwahati High Court, Kohima Branch stated that according to the UN more than 50 million of people are Trafficking each year and human Trafficking is one of the fastest and profitable organised crime. 

Jamir said, “Nagaland is in a transition point where trafficking happen due to its geographical location with international boundary with Myanmar and state boundary with Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur, and National Commission is trying to covering the 100 boundary and adjoining district in creating awareness to the people.”

“The main reasons for human trafficking are poverty, lack of employment and pursuit of a better life,” he added. Jamir further stated that there is prevalence of domestic child abuse in our society of which some are exposed but many remain unheard due to lack of awareness. He also explained in detail of the features, preventive measures and legal provisions of the child trafficking.

A Zibenthung Kithan, Deputy Commissioner, Tuensang in his keynote address says that child under the age of 18 years who are exploiting, transport and force against their will is illegal. Human Trafficking is a modern Slavery where children are the victim of cheap labour, child solider, prostitutions and organ trade. Child Trafficking is common especially in the illiterate and poor family of the society and this can be prevented by educating children and create awareness to the people, he said.

The programme was chaired by DCPO, Tuensang Yangthriba Sangtam and vote of thanks was delivered by SDO(C), Tuensang Sentilong Ozukum. The workshop was attended by Police, Government officials, NGOs, Tribal leaders, Student and Church organisation from Tuensang Town, stated a DIPR report.
