Some of those who voted YES had this to say:
• Yes, after the so called leaders and elders stop inciting the younger generation and misdirecting their young ones, if not the problem will remain unsolved until Nagaland become a land of one tribe.
• Definitely!!! Without this conviction and Hope, we don't have a future.
• We are consumed by cheap money flooded by GOI. We need to do something before it is too late. Lets not play a blame game, instead, lets introspect oneself and take action. Of course, the government can play a constructive role to create the environment.
• Yes, provided we can recognize each others rights, respect land boundaries, and fairness and justice by govt in governance.
• Yes, As education plays an important role.
• lest the elder generation stop encapsulating the venom of tribalism to the younger ones
• Yes, the younger Naga generations have no other choice but to work for building up a peaceful and multi-cultural society. This is important because unless we work towards it, we are doomed. All Nagas must realize that our different tribes should be seen as a strength and not a weakness. It is in our diversity that the beauty and rich culture of the Naga people shines for all the world to see.
• As a Christian it is very easy.
• Yes. But realistically speaking, parents play a huge role in this so one shouldn't be fed with the -isms. I can say this with much surety that Most educated parents and also today's educated youths do understand and feel the need to remove the -ism yet again sad that most still don't get it. Give us 50 years or 100 years or more but yes we will overcome tribalism and build a peaceful multi-cultural Naga society.
• Definitely YES.. It will be a long way from where we are right now but definitely Nagas will become one and "isms" will just become an evil subject of the past. I only hope to see it in my life time. Maybe, we don't have any ideas where and how to achieve it but i think inter tribal marriages are a good solution at this juncture to start with. Ahem... I have started my part.. I am very soon marrying a girl from another tribe.
• Yes....Two or three more Younger generation but definitely not the uprising youth generation...We have the roots, deep rooted in us on one's tribe uniqueness and not on one's individualistic view...
• Yes we can and why not, we're all Christians. But first this examples should be shown by our leaders, and when i say leaders it also mean our govt administrative officials including Politicians and Police, no Favouritism should be encouraged on tribal lines anywhere. The trend of asking "Ki manu asai" should be done away with because what tribe we belong to have nothing to do with the innocence or guilty nature of that individual person in question. Importance should really be given to check this "ISM" issue in Nagaland, because Nagas comprise of more than 16 tribes and there is always a chance of tribal conflict in such a big family as ours if we have such leaders and officials with deep rooted "ism" stuck deep within them. The FLYOVER INCIDENT in Dimapur, in which some police personal dared to make that bold statement of insulting the Sumi tribe.. Saying - "Sumi Khan Ki Koribolay Parebo" just shows how crooked and corrupt our system has become filled with tribalism and hatred for a particular community. There is a serious need to change this kind of people and their attitudes in our work place. Special classes and training should be made mandatory to govt officials before they pass out from their respective department to decrease such awkward incidents in the future. Only then can we reach a day someday where we'll all forget this particular feelings of Tribalism and generally acknowledge ourselves only as Nagas. - God bless us all.
• It is the younger generations that can see through, but the instilled mindset of the tribalism by our elders and leaders is still hanging around but in due course of time it will be meted out by the intellectuals. The present intellectuals are beginning to forecast the strength of oneness and not in an individual or tribe. tribalism should be done away with
• i remember the very song "we shall over come" yes there will be a time but @education which will widen our narrow ism concept. and yes when we learn to respect the differences and celebrate it.
• Yes, In many positive ways....
• The incidents of August 31 and September 1 make me realize that unless we do something about it, our future is doomed. The fact is that the Nagas consist of so many different tribes and rather than looking at it as a problem we must appreciate it and let it become our strength. We say Nagas are God's people, than if we really believe it, than we must accept that Nagas are a colorful people of many different tribes. SO why should our diversity be looked upon as a problem. Its our politicians who keep making our issues into a tribal issue. Its the government of India who injects venom to make it a issue of tribalism. But now, it is time for us to rise above everything and work together to build a peaceful society. The future Naga society has to be a multi-cultural society because we belong to many tribes.
• If the younger Naga tribes have the correct mindset and consider themselves as Nagas only.
Some of those who voted NO had this to say:
• Never, NO..there can never be peace over the world. War can never separate the world. Pride and Money overtook them all. This is not the beginning but not the end. These tribalisms, injustices, corruptions and wars can never get away from our hands. It is starting to creep in to our mind, it is and it will always be there until we change our sanity for money. Everything starts from money and it will take its own turn against us. It is the conclusion that until you waged a war against you, you can never have war.
• Because our parents never change their minds. and the 21st century generation adopts the parents mindset as they thought their children.
• Forget about peace in multi-culture. Tribalism in the Naga society starts as soon as you step out of the door. Why is our young Nagas so ignorant of our future. Hopeless, I have even heard a family saying that they would make their 20x10meter land a nation and would capture the other Naga tribes. If at all young Nagas can do such unimaginable thing I will surely go and call C. Ronaldo, Messi, Kaka, Nadal, etc to have a sup with my family with dal and akhunia by force. I really mean it!!!
• Until and unless Nagas become civilized and think as one its difficult. Our Greed is also another reason and no doubt the majority young Naga is Egoistic and Opportunist.
• Unless we the nagas break the chain of diversities in customs, language, culture, tribe supremacy etc in no generation the nagas would be able to attain a fine state hood and this is almost next to impossible..
• No, not until the young gets holistic education which embraces the whole lot of living in our contemporary world, hand in hand with apt knowledge of past, present and future lives.
• It is utterly sad to see the deeply rooted tribalism amongst the youngsters. Hence, it is impossible for us to overcome this tribalism and never it will stop. From ancient time, battles between communities happened. Thus, peace, harmony, strength and development depended on its leaders. There are certain elements that destroy the feelings of our homogenous character. It was there, it is there and it will be there. All things grow with time, yet, only limitations and compromise remains through agreements, but not from the heart.
Some of those who voted OTHERS had this to say:
• We have highly jingoistic ethnocentric insular groups – Tenyimias, Eastern Nagas then Aos, Kyongs and Sumis outside of that each apart or in league with one another in vigorous pursuit of their own agenda. No Naga tribe must act as though they “own” the rest of the other Naga tribes in a vassal like and dictatorial manner like in Kohima. The fall out has been witnessed by all Nagas on 1-9-2012 in Dimapur. Dimapur is next to say the least, if at all, Naga tribes are cognizant of these developments over the years. We have become highly prejudiced, bigoted and intolerant society. What then does the future bode well for the younger Naga generations to come??? What legacy are the highly visible leaders of today going to leave them behind??? Unless our mindsets change for the better, tribalism will take a turn for the worse and history will repeat itself. These are bad days. We must inculcate in them today the noble virtues and values so they do not stray or suffer.
• Hopelessness and unemployment may also trigger all kinds of societal ills
• freedom has a price and it is called courage....
• you cannot be free without being bold...
• with right kind of education yes bt no so others
• It'll take time to erase tribalism from our mindset.
• Its a complex issue. Since there are lots of Naga tribes, and as long tribal affairs/ethics goes on,this will follow on. So, my best suggestion is to learn and to live with it, because we can never forget our history/traditions nor substitute our culture. On the other hand, we are strongly trying to preserve our culture/traditions which may give ism a chance to grow. It is better that we learn solely to respect one another/culture/boundary/history/tribes like our ancestors left us to follow..........just my opinion!!!
• Cant say.... The riot that started in dimapur, all of them were in their early 20th only... And with so many naga brother located in greater nagalim.. Am sure even by the time of Jesus coming the issue will go on..
• Love your God with all your heart, mind and soul. love your neighbour as you love yourself. .when we can really put this two things into practise am 100% sure this tribalism will become extinct. .but looking at the present generation(its difficult but not impossible) matlab my answer is Other
• It is not "can" or "cannot"...the question should be "how?"...the church, the leaders, everyone of us can do something in promoting tribal harmony and love...don't ask whether we can...have the courage to find out how we can...
• if racism can be out of fashion in the western world why not tribalism in Nagaland?
• To overcome tribalism in near future.. First the different Underground groups should join hand and become one, without unity there wont be any peace and because of them fighting with different agenda and tactics, there is ISM issue. If they cant join and fight together, its better to banned the group and be under India as one.. Its not that i dont respect the history of Naga.. Abdul Kalam said, where there is Righteous in Heart there is Beauty in Character, Where there is beauty in character there is Harmony at home, Where there is Harmony at home there is order in Nation, Where there is order in Nation there is peace in world... So enough is enough, UG has become like a pest in our society.. Unless they come up with better solution there will be bloodshed, fear, hatred, ISM... In Nagaland
• It is not the UG that is the problem...it is our fear of the gun...when we become bold enough to be able to face our fears we will rise from our bondages...where are the heroes of justice and truth in our land...is there none?
• When we talk of solving 'Ism" in Nagaland, we have to first understand how language/dialect directly influences the speaker than the looks (In Naga context), and also understand how diverse our Naga language is!!!! Language diversity increases more, deep down to the smallest Naga villages. Each Naga tribes speaks different language, it sometimes has 2 or more speakers even among the tribes, forgetting the degree of variations between the stone-throw villages. The more the language varies, the more diverse our Naga society becomes i.e ism. So to think of re-building a Naga babel tower ism-free is impossible because it will fall every time we try.......A research on inter-Naga relationship to familarize all the Naga tribes, and its education/awareness is much needed of the hour to bring all Nagas together as one.
• We have organised tribal group namely Hoho. I wonder whether tribal Hoho unites us or divide us? Is it helping us to understand each other better or dividing us further? Has one done empirical study on this?
• younger generations should not be misled. Besides we live for a short time. so tribalism or isms should be stopped. As a naga i wanna c a more naganess then isms.
• To be proud of one's own tribe and its culture or traditions is not bad in itself. The problem begins when one is blinded with this self destructive force of seeing things from tribal lines. So what if I am an Ao? Its no different from me being a boy vis-a-vis a girl. What really matters is when I start becoming judgemental and this we must control and be aware of. If we can learn to love and be fair, inclusive and non judgemental we can surely overcome the perils of negative isms.
• Since Nagaland is for Christ, if a younger generation of Naga have the spirit of Christ – peace and oneness. Then it will ultimately melt down all the evil forces – hatred and discrimination. My suggestion is: In Christ- absolutely yes. If Not then Never at all.
• As long as political power in Nagaland is being misused by those in power, nepotism, favoritism, being their daily tool to overweight merit and justice, and the tribal dominance spirit projected through govt machinery, tribal color will exist in naga society. tribal sentiments can minimized only if we could throw out politician who seek votes on tribal line (emotional blackmailing) and stand unitedly against misusing of govt machineries by the people at the helm of power.
