‘CARING MOTHER EARTH’

Earth Day celebration at Government Polytechnic Kohima

The Government Polytechnic Kohima (GPK) in association with Key Foundation, New Delhi and Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India today organized a befitting programme to mark Earth Day celebration 2016 under the theme ‘Caring Mother Earth’ at GPK premises.

  Gracing the occasion as the chief guest, F.P. Solo, Commissioner & Secretary For School Education & SCERT said that Earth Day is a very joyful celebration and it is also celebration of life. He said Earth Day reminds us of the need and the responsibility to preserve and protect our environment.  

Stating that world is driven by science and technology, Solo said, “We need more of technical education, job oriented vocational courses which polytechnic institutions are imparting.” He, however, lamented that the full potential of technical education, polytechnic is not being realized. “But more and more people have realized about the need to pursue science and technical education,” he said and hoped that more youth will come for polytechnic courses.  

He also maintained that science education, technical education, polytechnics have potential to transform the lives of the young people provided opportunities given to them. The Commissioner and Secretary also said that those having scientific and technical education have scope and potential to work not only in the state but also across the globe.  

GPK principal Er Vipulhou Lhoungu said the purpose of Earth Day is to celebrate the planet earth, environment and raise public awareness about pollution. He said that April 22 is mark every year as Earth Day. However, our activities started two days ahead this time.  

Key Foundation secretary S.M. Faizani stressed on the need to pay attention towards our planet earth as our life depend on planet. He said that it is the responsibility of each and every individual to take care of our planet earth.  

Earlier, humanities department lecturer Keneingunuo Kire led the presentation while CSE Semester II Topeni presented a special number. The function was followed by slogan and drawing competition based on Caring Mother Earth and Quiz competition on science & technology. 12 educational institutions joined the competition.  

Meanwhile, an awareness rally will take place on April 21 from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM. Athili Kathipri, director technical education will grace the valedictory function as guest of honour on April 21 at 12:30 PM. The valedictory function will be chaired by Chubamenla while vote of thanks will be proposed by CSE lecturer Er. Khrieketoulie Rupreo.
