The Zunheboto Town Council (ZTC) on September 1 launched and inaugurated the CCTV Surveillance System in Zunheboto town, with the main objective of strengthening public safety, surveillance and traffic management.
The inauguration programme was held at the Conference Hall of the Zunheboto Town Council and was chaired by ZTC Councillor Hilika Y Yeptho. Superintendent of Police, Zunheboto, Dr Kupe Kapfo, attended the programme as the Guest of Honour.
A total of 44 CCTV cameras have been installed from Woodland Junction to Laghilato Junction under the 15th Finance Commission Grants, covering key areas of Zunheboto town.
Speaking at the programme, ZTC Chairperson K. Herato Sukhalu highlighted the importance of the surveillance system in improving security and maintaining public order. He said the CCTV cameras would help deter crimes, enable quicker police response, assist in traffic management and provide recorded footage for investigations and resolving disputes.
Sukhalu said the system also has an important role in monitoring public spaces, including bus stands, parking areas and commercial locations, particularly during night hours. He appealed to the public to take care of the CCTV infrastructure, describing it as a small but significant step towards modernising and improving the town.
Zunheboto Superintendent of Police Dr Kupe Kapfo, in his address, congratulated the Zunheboto Town Council for undertaking the initiative and described CCTV surveillance as an effective tool for maintaining security.
On traffic management, the SP suggested closer collaboration between the ZTC and the district police. He proposed that Zunheboto could explore the introduction of smart traffic booths and smart traffic lights in the future, stating that the town could take the initiative to become the first district in Nagaland to introduce such systems.
He further suggested measures such as multi-level parking facilities, zebra crossings and proper road signage to address traffic congestion. He pointed out that vehicles occupying roadsides were contributing significantly to congestion and said multi-level parking could help ease the problem.
The SP also stressed the need for proper planning of parking facilities around upcoming commercial and market areas. He said parking for customers should be incorporated into the design of new market facilities to prevent traffic congestion.
He further called for stricter management of construction materials placed along roads, suggesting that materials such as sand and gravel should be cleared within a limited period to minimise obstruction to traffic.
The SP also acknowledged improvements in Zunheboto town following the initiatives of the Town Council, while noting that the police continue to face constraints related to manpower and infrastructure. He expressed willingness to work jointly with the ZTC whenever opportunities for funding and development arise.
Earlier the programme was chaired by Hilika Y Yeptho Councillor ZTC invocation by Niukali K Assumi, Councillor ZTC. The programme also included a technical presentation by Hukaito Yeptho, LDA, ZTC, followed by the formal launching of the CCTV surveillance system by the Superintendent of Police.
The programme concluded with blessings by Ghunato Assumi, Associate Pastor (G), SBCZ, and benediction by G Hekuto Zhimo, Councillor, ZTC.
