DIMAPUR, AUGUST 20 (MExN): Lok Sabha Member of Parliament (MP) Wangyuh Konyak stated that the ‘neglect polity’ of the Government of India and the state are factors leading to the rise of extremist groups, underground groups and naxalites in the country. The MP also attributed the demand for autonomy to regional imbalance and the negligence of the Centre to pinpoint the root cause of the problem. Wangyuh said this while participating in the resolution moved by Assam MP Sonowal.
Referring to the decision to contribute 10% from the budgetary allocation to non-lapsable common pool for the development of the northeast region, Wangyuh claimed that 18 ministries were exempted from contribution. This, he said, exemplified the attitude of the various ministries towards the northeastern states.
Wangyuh also pointed out that the NEC created for the welfare of the region had demanded Rs 1,337 crores during 2006-07 out of which only Rs 600 crores was sanctioned. He accused the Centre of siphoning the remaining amount for fencing the Indo-Bangla border, which he claimed was creating vast imbalance for the development of the region.
The Lok Sabha MP from Nagaland also brought to the notice of the Parliament over non-existing medical colleges in three states including Nagaland which was in contravention of the recommendations made by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs.
The MP also expressed unhappiness over the non-increase of MPLADS to States like Mizoram and Nagaland which had only one MP each in both Houses of Parliament, while the same amount was being allocated to other MPs whose area of concern was no bigger than a district in Nagaland.
Taking into consideration all these, Wangyuh termed the attitude of the Centre as ‘grave injustice being meted out to the Northeast”, which according to him, was responsible for the rise of extremist groups, underground groups and naxalites in the country.
