A Central team led by Joint Secretary, VK Dewangan of Union Power ministry arrived in Imphal on Wednesday to take the first hand stock of the COVID-19 situation.

Official sources said that soon after they arrived in Imphal, the three-member Central team held meetings with officials of Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) and Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS), the two premier government hospitals taking major roles in treating COVID-19 infected patients in the state.

During the meetings with officials of RIMS and JNIMS, they collected reports on the COVID-19 treatments and control measures taken up at the two hospitals, the sources said.

The team is also scheduled to meet the state chief secretary and the principal secretary (Health) on Thursday after inspecting some COVID care facilities.

After collecting detailed reports of the pandemic in the state, the Central team will leave Imphal for New Delhi on October 30, the sources added.

The visit of the Central team to the state is in the backdrop of the worsening situation of the pandemic in the state as there are rapid rising cases of COVID-19 infections among the general population who have no significant travel history.

Manipur has been recording deaths of three to six COVID-19 patients per day since September apart from three-digit rise in the infection cases amid the hints of occurring community transmission in some places of the state.

Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh had recently noted the surge in positive cases and casualties and had expressed concerns on the same.
