Commends Dimapur district administration for its stand against DDADU demands
Dimapur, September 15 (MExN): The Chakhroma GBs’ Union (CGBU) today commended the stand taken by the Dimapur district administration against the “unreasonable demands” of the Dimapur District Autorickshaw Drivers’ Union (DDADU). The union specifically lauded the Deputy Commissioner, Dimapur “for his unwavering commitment to the public welfare as shown during the recent auto bandh called by the DDADU.”
Pointing out that the auto drivers charge exorbitant fares from the poor public, CGBU maintained that the move taken by the District Administration in revising the auto fares, keeping the public welfare in mind, was a much welcome step. “However it was very unfortunate and unwarranted that the Auto Drivers under the banner of DDADU had tried to have their selfish ways by using pressure upon the administration, totally jeopardizing the public convenience. But the wise decision taken by the administration not to yield to such pressure tactics adopted by the Union has strengthened the public faith on the authorities,” stated Atso Gwizan, general secretary and Thepfukedo Kuotsu, president of CGBU in a statement.
Auto rickshaw, it stated, is a poor man’s ideal means of conveyance. However, instead of serving the public, the auto drivers take advantage of the helplessness of general public and try to exploit the poor people’s pocket, the GBs union alleged. “And the recent agitation by the DDADU against the revised fare only goes to confirm that the Union has no feelings for public welfare but are only interested in enhancing their selfish gains. The DDADU should remember that when a union is formed it is not only for the interest of its members but also to see that the members perform their duty to the society satisfactorily,” it added.
The CGBU also brought to the notice of the district administration that the number of autos in Dimapur has grown so much that it has become a major source of traffic hazard in and around Dimapur town. Not only the autos plying in town areas, but also the autos especially plying on National Highway between Dimapur town and Chumukedima with drivers not following any traffic regulations and without any proper signal system has become a major contributing factors of mishaps on the highway, it alleged. Therefore, the union suggested to the authorities that issuing of license of autos be limited, proper routine and strict adherence to routes be implemented, and trainings be conducted to educate the drivers on basic traffic regulation and ethics from time to time.
