Chess Olympiad Torch Relay to reach Kohima on July 11

Kohima, July 7 (MExN): The 44th edition of the Chess Olympiad will be held at Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu from July 28 to August 10. 

In this edition, World Chess Federation (FIDE) has instituted the Chess Olympiad Torch Relay to mark the event in India.

To mark this occasion, Torch Relay covering 75 iconic locations of the country as part of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations will be organised. 

The inaugural launch of the Chess Olympiad Torch Relay was held at the IG Stadium, New Delhi on June 19. The torch will travel to 75 iconic locations selected in consultation with the ministry of culture across the country and reach Chennai on July 28. The torch will reach The Heritage, Kohima on July 11 where a function will be held from 7:00 am to 8:00 am.

Along with the torch relay, the Nagaland Chess Association (NCA) will organize a Blitz tournament on July 11 with Neiba Kronu, Minister of Planning & Coordination, Land Revenue and Parliamentary Affairs and President NCA as the chief guest. 

NCA in a press release informed that there will be cash prizes for open, under 18 years and 14 years categories. Therefore, all the chess players, parents, chess enthusiasts and chess lovers are invited to witness the relay. 

The association has also requested the respective authorities to grant special leave for students taking part in the event on July 11.

Meanwhile, a DIPR report stated that in regard to the torch relay, a meeting of the State level Committee for coordination and necessary logistic arrangement for the upcoming Relay chaired by the Secretary, Youth Resources & Sports, Wezope Kenye IAS was held in his office Chamber on July 7. 

The meeting chalked out the logistics arrangement and work distribution for organizing the event. The Chairman requested all the stakeholders and government departments to note the importance of the event and execute their parts efficiently for the successful conduct of the event.
