Dimapur, June 7 (MExN): Child Trafficking is fast becoming a big challenge in Naga society as more children are trafficked into prostitution, forced labour and other slavery-like conditions. In a worrisome report, Prodigals’ Home in Dimapur has revealed that 315 children in Nagaland have gone missing from January 2007 till date. Prodigals’ Home, which has been documenting missing reports appearing in the local dailies, stated that 68% of the missing reports are from Dimapur, 27% from Kohima and the rest from other districts of Nagaland.
Rokovilie and his sister are likely among those many children who have become victims of child trafficking. This very news has been brought to “We the Nagas” page in Facebook by a friend of the page who had an encounter with Rokovilie.
Rokovilie, around 11-12 year from Chakhesang tribe, said that few years’ back some non-locals lured him and his sister to Siliguri, since then Rokovilie and his sister had been kept separately. He works as a sweeper in trains which hold at the station in West Bengal and later submits the amount to them, failing which they would beat both Rokovilie and his sister. Once he tried to escape but was caught at Guwahati by the vendors who are well linked with his boss, Rokovilie informed.
They were staying at Burma camp in Dimapur but their parents might have changed the residence, the boy told.
On contacting E. M. Odyuo, Administrator of “We the Nagas” revealed that Rokovilie cannot just run away because he cannot leave his sister behind. Odyuo plans to file an FIR once he returns to his hometown. He also hoped that the Chakhesang Student Union too would swing into action as soon as possible and save the boy and his sister from the clutches of the non-locals.
Many peoples have commented on the link of “We the Nagas” and feels that the story should be published in the daily local paper asking the DGP of Nagaland to swing into action and bring back the boy.
