Chüpwe create awareness on substance use, drug abuse

Tseminyu, October 3 (MExN): The Chüpwe, which is the union for descendants of all people from Terogunyu village in Nagaland state organised a sensitisation programme on substance use disorder and drug abuse at the council hall, Terogvunyu new village on September 30. 

The programme was chaired by Terogvunyu Chüpwe Union, President Sehilo Thyü with the invocation by Setsing Tep, pastor, Terogvunyu village Baptist church, a press release stated here. 

The Deputy Commissioner of Tseminyu, Dr Tinojungshi Chang stressed that the district administration will provide all support and cooperation in dealing with the menace in the district. 

He requested the participants not to take law into their hands but report it to the concern authority in case of any incident related to drug use enabling the law to take its own course of action as befitted. He further encouraged the people of Terogvunyu to continue taking these kinds of initiatives which is the first of its kind in the entire district. 

Renbonthung Tungoe, Project Manager, Kripa Foundation talked about addiction as a disease of the mental, physical and spiritual and that a person suffering from this disease can be treated through a proper rehabilitation program. He also cited that the disease is a relapse able disease but one should not be disheartened as it is the nature of the disease. 

Abou Mere, Director, Kripa Foundation talked on the various problems associated with drug use socially, physically, mentally and spiritually but should be treated as a normal behaviour which is an obvious nature of the disease. He stressed that we should be informed about the disease which is the only weapon we should be armed with as a member of a society or a community that will enable us to cope or deal with any drug problem or issue that may arise in the area. 

He informed the participants that “our duty as a community is to focus only on how to reduce the demand of drug use by taking initiating programs such as detox camps, inclusion of primary prevention programs in the church calendars, referring them treatment and rehabilitation programs and so on.”

Neidonuo Angami, the first general secretary of NMA shared about how initially when drug use became prominent in Nagaland in the mid 80s, they took initiatives as a mother’s organisation to fight against the menace. She also shared some of her experience of how the first treatment programme was brought to Nagaland spearheaded by NMA along with Kripa foundation. 

The programme concluded with vote of thanks by Daniel Tep, chairman, Terogvunyu village followed by Kenyüyhun Tep, Pastor of Henbenji Baptist Church said the benediction.
