Citizens pledge to keep the Phek Town clean

Dimapur, April 14 (MExN): In order to sensitise the people regarding the importance of sanitation and green environment, the Phek Town Youth Society (PTYS) organised a ‘Clean-Green Operation Phek Program’ on April 14 at Hospital Junction, Phek.  

The Operation will carry on till the existence of PTYS, maintained a press note from Member Secy of initiative Kozote Akami. The Deputy Commissioner of Phek Murohu Chotso launched the program in the presence of Government Officers, public leaders various NGOs, all the colony chairman, GB’s, publics from the town and from the surrounding villages, it said.  

Speaking on the occasion, Chotso stressed that if the surrounding are clean, the people will become healthier and informed the gathering that that the bad habit of smoking or spitting Paan and Tamul anywhere will be banned.

  Rongsenmenla Imchen IFS, Divisional Forest Officer Phek who spoke on clean and green environment, said that tree should be planted to absorb poisonous gases, at the same time one should maintained clean stream and nullahs. She also encouraged people to maintain Green Market i.e. free from poaching and urged for shared transport to prevent pollution and to save fuel. and extended the department full support and cooperation for fruitful implementation of the program.  

The ADC and the Administrator PTC, Kuko Mero stressed on solid waste management and pointed out that it is everybody’s responsible to make 'Clean-Green Phek' into a reality.  

Tackling the issue of cleanliness and public health, Dr. Wetshelo T Mero, Senior Specialist, District Hospital Phek elaborated on poor sanitation and its effects and said that haphazardly disposing waste material and non-biodegradable substances such as plastics, bottle and rubbers causes health hazards to the people. Burning of plastic produces toxins infect our respiratory tract thereby causing cancer and may lead to death, he cautioned further informing that poor sanitation leads to common sickness like flu, diarrhea, pneumonia, cholera, dysentery etc.  

Meanwhile, the PTYS further said that the program adopted certain resolutions which were read out by Nuyi Hoshi, Convener Clean-Green Operation for effective implementation of the operation. The program resolved to be totally cleaned within three months time and gathering also appended their signature in the banner as a sign of full support and pledge to keep the town and surrounding clean, it added.
