Climate change to bring challenges for Kiwi farmers

Training on management practices of Kiwi cultivation held

  Phek, March 2 (MExN): A two days training on management practices of kiwi cultivation for of Phek District kiwi farmers was held on February 27 and 28 at Eden Farm, Zhavame and Thipuzu village. The training programme was organised under the aegis of the Climate Change Adaptation-North Eastern Region (CCA-NER) project of the German Development Cooperation (GIZ) in collaboration with Eden Farm, Phek District.   The programme saw the active participation of over 100 kiwi farmers from twelve villages.   During the opening remarks of the training, Kenneth M. Pala, Senior Technical Expert & Regional Co-ordinator, CCA-NER (GIZ), urged the farmers to take steps to equip themselves with the capacity to adapt to the ever changing climate. Bearing in mind that climate change has both a positive and negative angle to it, he stated that the farming communities need to optimize opportunities which climate change brings as well as to be prepared to face the challenges arising due to climate change. He also thanked the resource persons for their pro-activeness and willingness to come forward to help the kiwi farmers as well as the team from Eden Farm for coordinating and making the training a success.   The training sessions included topics such as soil and water management; practical hands on training on kiwi management such pruning, grafting and nursery management chaired by Tiakaba Longchar, Horticulture Department, Pfutsero, Phek District. Issues related to challenges and concerns on kiwi marketing were chaired by Khazi Lea, Chairman, Phek District Agriculture and Marketing Co-opertive Society.   Rose Rekha Dukru, Organic Farmer and Co-proprietor, Eden Farm, Zhavame, spoke at length on the importance of grading and packaging and highlighted the medicinal value of kiwi and steps to meet the ever increasing demand of the Indian market.   Dr. Rinku Bharali, Asst. Chief Technical Officer, Horticulture KVK, Phek praovided the much required technical advice on kiwi cultivation. The training session on both the days ended with interactive sessions on challenges and way forward.
