Kohima, December 1 (MExN): The Centre of Excellence for Music & Arts (CEMA) was officially inaugurated at Ministers’ Hill, Kohima, by Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio and renowned composer and Padma Bhushan awardee Dr AR Rahman. The event was attended by Deputy Chief Ministers TR Zeliang and Y Patton, among other dignitaries.
Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio described the establishment of CEMA as a shared dream of artists and musicians in Nagaland. He emphasized the state government’s commitment to nurturing young talent in music, arts, and sports, particularly those without access to proper opportunities. Rio expressed gratitude to Dr. Rahman for supporting this vision and for his dedication to empowering underprivileged youth. “Nagaland will not only be known as the land of festivals but also as a land of music,” he remarked.
Dr. A.R. Rahman, during his address, shared his joy at being part of the inaugural event and highlighted the rich musical and cultural heritage of Nagaland. He announced that his musical documentary Headhunting to Beatboxing, which explores Nagaland’s sonic and cultural traditions, has been selected for the 2025 Palm Springs International Film Festival.
Advisor to the Chief Minister, Abu Metha, praised Neiphiu Rio’s long-standing support for music and arts in the state, which has enabled local talents to achieve international acclaim. He noted recent achievements such as the Nagaland Madrigal Singers’ and the Nagaland Chamber Choir’s victories at the World Choir Games, underscoring the government’s pivotal role in fostering talent through resources and infrastructure.
The Centre, constructed at a cost of ₹5 crore under the Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment scheme, aims to elevate Nagaland’s music and arts to national and global platforms. The Youth Resources & Sports Department implemented the project, with construction led by M/s Infrastructural Development Consortium under EPC mode.
The event also featured a welcome address by TaFMA Chairman Theja Meru, special performances, and a vote of thanks delivered by Kuvelu Tetseo.
