Guwahati | January 10 : It is going to be Gogoi versus Gogoi affairs in Assam. Chief Minister of Assam Tarun Gogoi has accepted the challenge from the BJP on Monday and said he had decided to move court against RTI activist Akhil Gogoi for allegation that the chief minister’s kin owned assets to the tune of Rs.17.9 crore in the US. Addressing a press conference today in Guwahati, Tarun Gogoi said that he had decided to file an FIR and a criminal case against Akhil Gogoi.
According to the reports based on documents procured through US-based information Commerce Company Intellius, RTI activist Akhil Gogoi had claimed that the chief minister’s wife, their daughter Chandrima Gogoi and son-in-law Prasenjit Phukan owned a total of five houses worth Rs 17.9 crore in the US.
As a move to corner the chief minister of Assam on the issue, BJP leaders LK Advani and Nitin Gadkari had asked Tarun Gogoi to file a defamation suit against Akhil Gogoi if whatever he said was wrong. “If Gogoi doesn’t do so, the people will be forced to think otherwise,” the BJP leaders had said at an NDA rally here on Sunday.
Terming Akhil’s allegation as a “big lie” and “conspiracy” against him, the Chief Minister said his daughter and son-in-law owned just one house in the US. “The hostel, where my son-in-law had once stayed, and another building where he had put up on rent, have been claimed as our property by Akhil Gogoi,” the Chief Minister said.
“Go to the website (Intellius), you will get all the details…Had the allegation held water, there would have been utter chaos in national politics by now on the issue,” Gogoi said. Gogoi said he was very upset that his son-in-law, who works in Google in the US, had been unnecessarily dragged by the RTI activist.
Tarun Gogoi added that his decision to file the cases was to shut the mouth of Akhil and others who would have tried to politicize the issue. Tarun Gogoi said the BJP should have done some enquiry before coming up such move against him.
