Dimapur, June 30 (MExN): The Chief Minister’s Secretariat has issued a statement on the incident involving Home Minister Imkong Imchen. Pointing out that it had received information in the morning that the Minister was held up at Kathmandu Airport for carrying Indian currency notes in the denominations of Rs.500 and Rs.1000, which are apparently not allowed to be carried into Nepal, the press note from the CM’s Secretariat clarified that the Nagaland Home Minister was unaware of this rule and was faced with the inconvenience.
“Apparently, many Indian travelers, tourists and traders going to Nepal constantly face this problem and get held up due to the restriction of carrying high denomination Indian currency notes into Nepal.
However the timely intervention of the Government of India and the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu ensured his smooth return to the country”, stated the CM’s Secretariat in a note issued by Press Secretary to the CM Abu Metha. It was also clarified that the Home Minister was on a private visit to Nepal along with his lady wife and family members. It was informed that the Home Minister departed Kathmandu and reached New Delhi this evening at 5:30 PM.
It was further clarified that the Nagaland Home Minister was not arrested, as reported in sections of the national press, but only held up to clarify his position. It is also stated that, the Home Minister was carrying only Rs. 2 lakhs in Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000 denominations and not as reported in sections of the media. This amount was acknowledged by the authorities in Nepal on record.
