Dimapur, October 18 (MExN): The Confederation of Nagaland Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CNCCI) has responded to a recent press release by the Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC), clarifying its position on key issues related to the business community’s involvement in decision-making processes.
The DMC’s statement asserted that urban local bodies (ULBs), as statutory entities with legislative and executive powers, are not obligated to consult with external organizations on business-related matters. In response, CNCCI pointed out a government standing order issued in September 2021 (Govt. Order No. CON-6/LOR-II/2006 (Vol-I)), which mandates that administrators of ULBs must include representatives from the business community in their advisory committees for decisions affecting businesses. CNCCI emphasized that failure to comply with this order would be considered contempt of government directives and could lead to embarrassment for the state.
Regarding the DMC’s allegations that concerns raised by the Dimapur Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) about collection and taxation were "speculative and unwarranted," CNCCI urged the DCCI to address its grievances directly with the DMC. The confederation stressed the importance of ensuring that business communities are protected and not subjected to undue burdens beyond what is outlined in the Municipal Act and government guidelines.
Dr. Khekugha Muru, Chairman of CNCCI, and Dr. Seyievilie, General Secretary of CNCCI, reaffirmed the need for constructive dialogue between ULBs and the business sector to foster a conducive environment for economic growth.
