CNTC asserts call for ‘Foothill Road’

15-member delegation on goodwill mission to Mkg

Mokokchung, June 2 (MExN): A fifteen-member delegation of the Central Nagaland Tribal Council (CNTC) arrived at Mokokchung on a goodwill mission and held a meeting with the Ao Senden (Ao Hoho), Watsu Mungdang (Ao Women Hoho) and AKM (Ao Students’ Conference) and expressed solidarity with the Ao Senden in regard to the present imbroglio between Assam and Nagaland over the May 24 incident at Mariani.

Asserting that the demand for a Foothill Road in Nagaland was a long felt demand of the people of Nagaland, the CNTC president said that the excuse given by the Nagaland government about the lack of fund is not acceptable and added that the road can be constructed in a phase wise manner on ‘considerable funds’.

The CNTC officials pointed out that good roads are a sign of development and therefore asserted that once this Foothill Road is constructed there would be many townships in the foothill areas. The CNTC added that the road would ensure that Naga travelers are not harassed at the hands of the Assam based organizations that resort to different bandhs causing inconvenience to the Naga people.

Asserting that the demand for the Foothill Road by the Ao Senden is not only for the Aos but also for all Nagas, the CNTC said that they would extend all help to the Ao Senso Telongjem, Dimapur who have resolved to go for contributions for the construction of the road if the government fails to implement the project.

“We are willing to help financially and materially…we will not go begging for donations but we will simply ask for contributions,” said a CNTC member. They asserted that the stand of the Ao Senden is not due to harassment or weakness but simply a sign of sacrifice on the part of the whole Ao people for a better tomorrow.

After a closed door meeting with the apex Ao bodies, the CNTC President, Ntsamao Ngullie disclosed to local media persons that  the CNTC members came up to Mokokchung to show their solidarity and respect  to the Ao Senden with regard to the present bandh and to show that ‘they are one among them’ with regard to the tension with Assam.

Meanwhile, it is learnt that the Nagaland Home Commissioner Temjen Toy is in Mokokchung and is scheduled to meet with the district administration, police and the Ao Senden. However, till the filing of this report, no information about the outcome of the meeting could be obtained.
