Imphal| August 3

BJP’s national vice president, Shivraj Singh Chauhan on Saturday came down heavily on Congress party while alleging that the latter had never focused in the Northeast region during its regime.

The former three-time chief minister of Madhya Pradesh and in-charge of BJP membership drive committee, who arrived in Imphal on August 3 was addressing a state level membership drive of the BJP held at MSFDC auditorium in Imphal’s Palace Compound.

Chauhan accused the Congress of doing nothing for the development of the region except its ‘habitual’ divide and rule to control the region.

He claimed that since N Biren Singh-led BJP coalition government came to power in Manipur, development paces have been remarkably accelerated and the state would become the most advanced state of the country.

"I believe that if the current pace of development goes on undisturbed, Manipur would be the most advanced state of the country in the next 10 years' time,’ he said.

Chauhan also claimed that under the BJP led coalition government in Manipur, peace and harmony among the different communities have been restored.

"The unity and harmony of the state was at stake owing to Congress’s divide and rule policy", he alleged. "The divide and rule policy of the British era was being applied by the Congress to rule the country," he further said.

Alleging that nothing was done by the Congress for the development of the NE region, he claimed that BJP is giving special focus in the Northeast region of the country.

He also claimed that, during the regime of Atal Bihari Vajpaye, the Ministry of Development of Northeast Region (DoNER) was set up while current Prime Minister Narendra Modi has established a separate ministry for the tribals. "Such initiatives for the region were never taken up during the Congress regime," he further alleged.

Chauhan then said that a joint initiative of all sections of people is needed for development of the country.

At the same time, development of Northeast is needed for advancing the country, he added.

Attending the function, Manipur chief minister Biren Singh hoped that the target for enrolment of 1.50 lakh people in Manipur to the BJP will be achieved during the membership drive which would be continued till August 11.

He then called upon the party leaders and members to speed the drive so as to ensure enrolment of above two lakh members against the target.

Biren then claimed that the people of the state are keeping full faith in his government, while calling upon party workers to work hard with sincerity.
