The Mokokchung Press Club and Rotary Club Mokokchung had a joint discussion on the topic ‘Discourse on Conservation’ on August 26 at Rotary House, Mokokchung. Moderated by Limalenden Longkumer, President, Mokokchung Press Club (MPC), members from Anglers Association Mokokchung, Interact members from Jubilee Memorial School, and Mayangnokcha Government Higher Secondary School also took part in the discussion. The discussion on conservation was looked at from a global perspective in the local context. Various areas of conservation and environmental concerns were discussed and stressed upon by different people present in the meeting.

Chuba Walling, DRPO Mokokchung, said that many of the valuable primal trees are becoming extinct along with other wildlife species. “We should create awareness especially among the villagers to conserve the natural flora and fauna,” he stressed.

Executive Engineer, PHED, Er. Yanger, a Rotary member, also spoke on the need to educate the people on conservation and sustainable hunting, fishing and livelihood. He said that conservation should be a way of life.

Adding to his talk, Temsu Jamir, Administrator, Eden Academy and Rotary member, said that conservation was the way of life during the times of our ancestors. “But now, we cannot even call ourselves ‘tribals’ since we are no longer close with nature. We are going beyond our needs and wants making it impossible for us to conserve,” he lamented.

Temsu further maintained that the citizens of Mokokchung need conservation for survival, especially when it comes to the problem of water supply. The Anglers Association Mokokchung presented a brief overview of riverine fish resources in Mokokchung district and also talked on how the anglers are supporting sustainable fishing in the district.

The impromptu discussion ended with all members resolving to make efforts towards saving the environment through “conservation with sustainable practice”. The meeting was chaired by Dr. Sunep, President, Rotary Club Mokokchung.
