Dimapur Government Higher Secondary School, half-Nagarjan, is faced with yet another dilemma of intrusion into its campus. Only this time, it is the work of an authorized contractor. It has been reported that the contractor for the school building extension has dismantled a retaining wall without informing the school authorities. The school is now faced with multiple problems which could have been avoided, if the contractor had corresponded with authorities before bringing down the wall.
In the absence of a wall, many objects inside the school have gone missing. “We have lost chairs and tables,” an employee informed. The place has also become a haven for youngsters. Recently, the GB of the colony complained to school authorities that young boys and girls were taking advantage of the classrooms at night. Breaking the wall has also increased the number of students bunking classes. A temporary bamboo enclosure has been erected but that has not helped.
It may be mentioned that the dismantled wall was constructed to curb encroachment and control bunking, with money contributed by teachers and students of the school. “We are doing everything with limited resources…we should know what is going on,” the employee said.
The authorities are irked about the fact that the school was neither informed about breaking the wall nor extending the building. “It is an insult to the school authorities…we were not informed on anything by the contractor,” another employee informed. Earlier, the government had ordered a blueprint of the construction work be made available to the school authorities but none of that was produced. The school is unaware of what is being constructed and what may come next. “We don’t even know what sort of extension is going on…next they may decide to dismantle the school building without our knowledge,” the employee said.
It has been reported that the school authorities got in touch with the contractor concerned. But the contractor is going ahead with work without coordinating with the school authorities. The school had earlier written to the department Secretary to take necessary action but no step has been initiated so far. Interestingly, some elements have also warned the school authorities not to confront the issue.
