PHEK, MAY 2 (MExN): The Chakhesang Students’ Union (CSU) has expressed strong condemnation and deep displeasure towards the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) and EPC contractor M/s Ratna Infrastructure Project Pvt. Ltd. for their alleged negligence and continued failure to ensure timely development and maintenance of the Kohima-Jessami Road (Package 2).
In a statement issued Thursday, the Union said that despite multiple official representations and seven separate site inspections, no significant progress or tangible development has been observed on the road stretch. The CSU cited reference letters dated between October 2024 and April 2025, calling attention to the lack of response or visible action by the concerned authorities.
With the monsoon season approaching, the Union warned that the current deplorable and worsening condition of the road poses a serious threat to commuters, hampers mobility, and reflects administrative apathy. It described the ongoing neglect and absence of accountability as unacceptable and a clear disregard for public welfare and infrastructure responsibility.
The CSU has issued a seven-day ultimatum to NHIDCL to take immediate action and address critical concerns. These include the need to fill potholes to ensure safe and smooth travel, clear road blockages by removing landslide debris and other obstructions to restore unhindered vehicle movement, and ensure round-the-clock maintenance. The Union also called for the construction of proper drainage systems to withstand the impact of the monsoon and the implementation of precautionary measures to mitigate rockfall and landslides, thereby safeguarding travelers and minimizing further damage.
The Union demanded that urgent repair and maintenance work be undertaken without delay. It also emphasized the importance of maintaining proper drainage and water management infrastructure during construction to ensure durability and safety. Acceleration of work on the remaining portions was also stressed, so that a good and reliable road may be made available to commuters at the earliest.
Failure to act within the stipulated time frame, the CSU warned, would compel the Union to initiate stricter forms of protest and action, for which the concerned agencies would be held fully responsible.
The CSU affirmed its commitment to the rights, safety, and development of the people and stated it would not remain a silent spectator to what it described as prolonged injustice and institutional failure.
